Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood began on London's King's Road in 1971, where her shop with Malcolm McLaren became the crucible of punk and dressed a generation of rebels including the Sex Pistols.

From safety pins and slogan tees she built a revolution in cloth, taking the rage of the street and the rigour of tailoring and forging a uniquely British language of provocation.

In the 1980s she turned to history, mining seventeenth- and eighteenth-century dress for corsets, crinolines and bustles that she reinterpreted with subversive wit and unmistakable craft.

Her orb logo, a planet crowned and ringed, captured her genius: the marriage of British heritage and futuristic rebellion, of Savile Row tradition and anarchic spirit.

Long an environmental and political activist, Westwood made sustainability and dissent central to her house, leaving a legacy in which fashion is never only beautiful, but always meaningful.
